For over 15 years I have been developing instruments and hardware that are truly unique. Driven by a passion to make the bass as good as I thought it should be, I experimented with tonewoods, construction methods, and eventually the hardware itself. Ultimately, I found it advantageous to focus on the hardware instead of the instrument. I found it even more advantageous to focus on the bridge, when I heard the result of a particular experiment- the removal of saddles. Although I did not know at the time, I was really on to something, even if it was difficult to describe. I ultimately incorporated this bridge design into my own basses.
Eventually, I adapted this system to work on other basses besides my own, and the Ray Ross bass bridge was born, still imparting its characteristic sound, and being a supremely effective upgrade. This was naturally followed by the 5 string bridge, in 17 and 19mm spacing.
Six years later, I have converts and devotees on almost every continent. Oem’s large and small, bedroom warriors to Grammy winners, they all continue to have one steady question- “why does it sound so good?
THE SCIENCE-
Several years after my bridge was released I was contacted by a Phd of acoustic physics, at St. Andrew’s college, in Scotland. His name is Jonathan Kemp. He asked if he could write the scientific paper on my hardware, I said sure.
Three years later he sent me the peer reviewed, published paper on my hardware. My mind was blown. I knew the bridge was good, but I didn’t know why. Once Dr. Kemp had a chance to set up and test my system, using complex devices involving lasers, it started becoming clear.
The result of a bass string being tensioned without a saddle are isolated modes of vibration. Each mode is permitted to vibrate on its own plane, independently of one another, on the same string. Whereas a string with a saddle is incapable of this movement because the signal is constrained and mutated by the saddle. To put it very simply, the string can now do what it wants to do. The signal is now perfected. The result can be stunning for some, and until Ray Ross, the only instrument that could achieve this “beat” is a piano, which requires 3 strings to do this. Ray Ross can do it with one.
It is for this reason that Ray Ross continues to be the most advanced, functionally perfect bass bridge in the world.
I have many exciting things in the works, the recent development of the saddleless electric guitar, for instance. It functions like the bass bridge only in a different environment. I started with the Strat type guitar because there are so many. Rest assured I have telecaster and tailpiece bridges on the way soon. Also on the books are hardware pieces entirely made out of aerospace carbon. This is an often overlooked material because it is not chrome. It does however hold unspeakably tight frequency response and certainly deserves its day.
I personally invite you to find out what mechanically driven high fidelity can do for your playing, your sound, your presence. Don’t you want to play ALL of your instrument?
